As of Vectorworks 2022, your design software will provide native support for Apple Silicon. Since the end of 2021, Apple's M1 Pro and M1 Max are available. Various tests have proven a positive effect on the calculation speed within Vectorworks.
A decent-spec M1 computer can be used for what we call in our system requirements a ‘minimal’ and ‘basic’ use of Vectorworks. This means that the M1 processor is adequate if you mainly work on smaller projects and with simple models without too much detail, or if you design medium-sized residential projects with average detailing. In this case, we recommend a PC with an 8-core GPU and 16 GB of unified memory for optimal performance.
A computer with an M1 Pro or M1 Max processor is much more powerful. The first tests suggest that this hardware is adequate for professional use of Vectorworks. However, because these processors are only just available on the market, our experience is limited. In any case, choose at least 16 GB of unified memory. If you are regularly engaged in BIM projects, creating lighting plans for major events, working on site models for landscape development, or if you require the demanding detail level of an interior contractor, consider purchasing a top-of-the-line model with 32 GB of unified memory.
